I stumbled across this article (http://www.vcstar.com/news/2011/feb/25/shiny-toy-guns-welcomes-return-of-newbury-park/) this morning. It's about a month old, but it does explain a little bit more of the why.

Quote
"We were playing 300 shows a year, waking up in different countries every night, drinking like fish," Dawson said. "The boys were (drinking)," Faye interjected.

"The abuse of alcohol," Dawson continued, "leads to the abuse of life, poor judgment, the inability to communicate, and the lack of sleep was very detrimental. The situations we were living in hour by hour, day by day, made it impossible for a human being to coexist with another one."

So just as in any relationship where feelings get flailed around and buried under alcohol, they simply needed to sober up and talk to each other again.

The mending of their relationship started in October or November.

"Our communication with Carah had been sparse and random," Dawson said. "All of us were doing a whole bunch of laying in bed, looking at the ceiling."

Dawson and Martin didn't even know where Faye lived, so they tracked her down in Sweden "for no real reason other than to repair our friendship," Dawson said. "If there was to be a rejoining of the band, then that would be discussed some other day. The main thing is, we weren't talking, and we had lots of damage and scar tissue."

They flew to Sweden and met at a coffee shop. "We talked for days, hours, and began to peel the layers time creates when you don't deal with things," Dawson said. "The parallel of the relationship between one human in love with another human is so ridiculously relevant to this situation that it's amazing. Each side thought the other was cheating on them, lying, hated them. When we actually got face time, everything said and done was a lot smaller than what it was built up to be. Real emotions and feelings began to move around in the circles they did when the band started."

I am surprised about the alcohol abuse. I mean, we all suspected the lack of communication part, but I never thought there was another element tossed in to it. This confirms for me that the Carah break and the Sisely break were totally different. I really do believe them when they say that Sis leaving was mutual. They clearly had problems back then, that they don't have now. Anyway, yeah....

The alcohol abuse would make sense (not saying I condone it). I mean, you live on tour, and practically LIVE at clubs, where they undoubtably give you free alcohol, it was bound to happen.

I'm glad they're all mature enough to realize what went wrong, and to humble themselves enough to actively seek out reparation.

It makes me love them all the more.

I agree with you completely on the part I bolded. However, I do not agree that their alcohol abuse "was bound to happen." No one forced them to drink.

I also heard drug abuse played a role in the breakup. I'm not sure the truth behind it, though.. what matters is they're back together and happy Smiley

Of course no one made them drink. I don't drink myself, and don't think it's a good thing to do ever. But I know it's acceptable and most people have drinks now and then, and if you aren't consciously aware of the fact that you're being supplied alcohol every night, and you just drink what's given, then it's not surprising.

I too heard about the drug abuse.

But yeah, like you said - I'm just happy to see them together again.

Somehow I find drug abuse less surprising than alcohol. Probably because of Starts With One.

Yeah... I would hope that stuff was in the past.

I saw their last show in NJ, right before Carah left. It was a December show.

I chilled by the tour bus to meet them, and met everyone except Carah. Chad, at least, was pretty tipsy.

Cool times, though.

I agree. Maybe this time everything is? I mean, every interview I've seen with Carah and Jeremy lately, they seem so, so happy.

They didn't appear in a stupor when I would see them back in the day.  Anyway, hearing them acknowledge the sleep issue is reassuring.  I had thought before, long ago, if ever for some reason they were to ask me for general advice, I'd tell them, especially Chad, to get some sleep.  It may sound dramatic, but it's really just conventional wisdom.  When you start seeing it in the performances, you know it's a problem.  You only have to be "on" for that one 90 minute performance.  But you can't achieve your goals going around like a zombie, sapped of drive and mental acuity.
