Why? They're happy that everyone is still liking Major Tom.

It's the happy face in conjunction with "the darn thing won't die" that confuses me. I don't associate wishing death on successful things as happiness. The only times I've ever wished death on something, like difficult homework assignments, is because I truly did not like them. However, I do take happy faces to mean someone is happy. So, see? I'm confused because I feel like they're sending two opposite messages.

I don't think it's confusing. I mean, in all the interviews about it I've seen, The Shinies say that Major Tom was originally just going to be a 15 sec demo for a commercial. They never expected it to do and become everything it has, especially being a cover. So I don't think they were really wishing death on it... more so being ironic. Hence the smiley face.

I over think stuff when it's written versus spoken, so maybe it is meant as irony or sarcasm.

Yes, I love him. Can't help it. Don't want to.

Well, it's gotta be a LITTLE weird too, when a song you did for a commercial (a COVER nonetheless and not your OWN material) makes it HUGE.... It's got to be a little bittersweet for them.  I am sure they love the success and marketing publicity the song gets them, but maybe they get tired of hearing and playing it once in a while, as they didn't even get to pick it out.

I say it's twofold.

That's the funny thing about sarcasm. Sometimes it's just joke. Other times, there's some truth behind the statement. Can you tell me you've never been sarcastic about something to give one impression, but in truth you sort of feel the other way?

I get what you're saying, Cat. That's kinda what I've been mulling over as well.
